Terra Shelving System: A Dynamic and Customizable Storage Solution

Award-winning designer Seth Gamson introduces the Terra Shelving System

The inspiration for the Terra Shelf came from the concept of tangent objects, which are products that share a parallel relationship with the surface they are oriented on. Gamson's early prototypes had a ribbon-like form, but he took an exciting turn when he broke down these rolling forms into flat geometric bends. After extensive experimentation with materials and scale, as well as rounds of form refinements, the Terra Shelving System was born.

What sets the Terra Shelving System apart is its customizable and modular nature. Each module of the shelving system is dynamic in both form and function, offering multiple terraces of storage. Users can create unique compositions of contiguous or separate shelving patterns, depending on their needs and preferences. The modules are designed with two universal wall contacts that allow for easy linking with additional modules. The spacing of these wall contacts is carefully designed to align with the studs of a wall, ensuring stability and ease of installation.

The Terra Shelving System is made using laser cutting technology and 11 gauge steel. The refined hand-bending process ensures the precise and elegant form of each module. The shelving system is available in three sizes: small (26" x 12.5" x 15"), medium (42" x 12.5" x 15"), and large (58" x 12.5" x 15").

Installing and using the Terra Shelving System is a straightforward process. Users simply need to determine their desired pattern, install the bracket hardware on the wall, and hang the shelving units on the hardware. The result is a visually stunning and functional storage solution that adds a touch of artistry to any space.

The Terra Shelving System was conceptualized in October 2018 and realized in December 2018. All design and handwork was done in Philadelphia, PA, with the laser cutting carried out by Mark Metals in Reading, PA.
